Union County Comprehensive Plan

The Fellowship meets weekly in member homes from Labor Day through mid-May, but meets at the Heiter Community Center in Lewisburg on the first Sunday of the months of October through April. We traditionally do not meet on the Sundays following Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day and do not meet on Easter Sunday. The usual annual schedule however is not without special traditional events. In the summer there is one meeting a month including a weekend “camp out”, usually at a state park group camping area. It begins on Friday evening and ends Sunday afternoon. In the winter, usually in January, there is a corresponding “camp in” where we all gather at some member’s home for the similar length weekend. In December we usually have a Sunday for cookie baking and another for solstice readings. We frequently do egg dying on Palm Sunday. We usually schedule one Sunday during the year to provide and prepare a full meal for the residents of Haven Ministry’s homeless shelter in Sunbury.

The Fellowship has several ongoing service projects. One is trail maintenance of the Linn Trail, an approximately one mile long loop off of the mid-state trail in Lycoming County among several vernal ponds near Mohn Mill Road. This is usually scheduled as a Sunday outing event in the spring and again in the fall. Another project involves supplying and maintaining of two rooms at the SVWIT (Susquehanna Valley Women in Transition) house in Lewisburg.

The Fellowship is entirely lay led. Each year the active members of the Fellowship are divided into five groups and each group is responsible for about six weeks of meetings. The responsibilities include planning the program, providing a meeting place, and distributing the schedule information to the members. Each group’s sequence of meetings usually includes a potluck meal, which may include a brief program or activity.

Regular Sunday meetings begin about 10 am with coffee and snacks. The program starts at 10:30. We have announcements, sing a few songs from our own songbook, and have a program led or arranged by the group in charge. The program usually begins with a brief presentation by the leader, but consists mostly of a free-ranging group discussion and usually breaks up around noon. On most Sundays there is a separate program for younger children planned by the religious education director and the parents of the participating children.

The Fellowship serves as an extended family for its members, celebrating life’s passages. We have a dedication service for our young children, perform weddings for Fellowship family members, and conduct Memorial Services for members that have died.

Our last meeting in May is our annual meeting at which we elect officers for the coming year, decide on major expenditures, review and modify our procedures as seems appropriate. Our annual budget is around $1000 per year, and is decided on in discussion at the annual meeting. Income is provided by contributions from members as they may decide. We usually make contributions to the Unitarian Universalist Association, The UU Service Committee, the Priestley Memorial Chapel, and C.A.R.E. of Lewisburg, with modest expenditures for programs and Sunday school materials. If our bank balance seems low the treasurer may mention at a meeting that we need some more money and contributions follow.
